The New Soldier (The boy who was a Man)

There’s a wooden swing creaking over an empty yard
And a flag that’s faded, yet remembers who they are.
There’s a broken heart no longer satisfied with dolls
Clinching the air for comfort crying in the school’s halls.

Some say he was a hero. Some say he was a saint.
He was rushed into his legacy by others who hesitate.
Just eight months after high school graduation day
Others all remember a youth that will never fade.

The girl crying in the school… true, they’d made a mistake.
Two months along and in love with a toy soldier that did break.
Suddenly alone with a large world crashing to her feet.
She’d forgotten how to breathe, the baby would never meet

The little boy who played with Hot Wheels and kicked soda cans.
Who fell in love with the girl next door. Who was a Pacers fan.
The young man who was shipped to some foreign and distant land.
No, this baby will never get to meet the boy who was a man.

There’s a dead oak tree creaking over a cemetery hill.
The wind’s a little subtle, but enough to give a chill.
There’s a wooden swing creaking over an empty yard
And a flag that’s faded, yet remembers who they are.

Have you ever seen the American flag weep?
You should have seen it sobbing like a baby
When handed to a widow at only seventeen.
