I wrote this when I was 17 years old. It was originally written as a song, but I''ve never gotten around to composing the music that is in my head for it.

A light in the corner reveals a shadow
Who is it standing there? Why? I don’t know.
He reaches to touch me, his hands are like fire
My heart aches suddenly feeling desire but

We are both strangers in this strange land
No light to guide our way, no one to take our hand.
Loneliness, it eats the soul. No one will understand
That being alone in this strange, strange world
Is like a song without a band.

Do I even know his name or does he know mine?
Our shadows dance closer. Oh, is this such a crime.
He promises to love me and will dry away my tears.
Well… I’ve hurt till I laughed, laughed till I cried…
And he was never near.

Five years since our paths have crossed- no need to take it hard.
His legacy is runnin’ around in the front yard.
Just another nameless face for the world in which we live in.
There’s no one to talk to and no one to give in.

We are both strangers in this strange land
No light to guide our way, no one to take our hand.
Loneliness, it eats the soul. No one will understand
That being alone in this strange, strange world
Is like a song without a band.

Now his son is all grown up, he graduates today
An empty seat for his father, why must it be this way?
Strangers in the audience…
Strangers in the audience…
He struggles to find his way.

One year later, his son goes to war
Strangers all around him, what are they fighting for?
Strangers in the distance…
Strangers in the distance…
He struggles to know more.

Nineteen years since our paths have crossed, no need to take it hard.
His legacy is buried in Arlington’s front yard
Just another nameless face, the world suffers no real loss
To strangers it’s just another name upon another wooden cross.
