As a wee lad, I had SUCH a close friend,
Barely four inches tall, his only suit so yellow,
We would play together for hours on end,
Pete was my Canary, my fine feathered fellow!
I'm told such a bird should be timid and shy,
No way a playmate for imaginative boys,
Just left to sing from his cage, safe and high,
I saw him more interesting than all of my toys!
'Lil Pete considered my finger his perch,
And my small shoulder, a magic carpet ride!
Hanging on, he would bob with my every lurch,
I could do ANYTHING with Pete at my side!
On cascading fingers, Pete climbed pretend ladders,
A tunnel of blocks proved such fun to run through,
That bird's reputation would cause many to chatter,
"There's NOTHING that boy's crazy bird cannot do!"
My Pete passed away, caught cold in the night,
But never forgotten, still up to this day,
His bright yellow spirit inhabits mind's sight,
Little friend, in you debt this boy surely will stay...
