FADED BLACK AND WHITE

Another life has ended, but not everyone does know
That the rose has withered into the harsh garden snow.
Headlines of mayhem, gospel of missiles now in sight
And this life went whispered in faded black and white.

Didn’t know that darkness had descended. How could I
When the news turns to a heart that would rather lie
About Hollywood glamour falling to the shadows of shame.
But, would anyone have remembered an average man’s name?

Two weeks latter, I ponder and remember someone I once knew
Waiting for their phone call, living on with life- having no clue.
e-mail notification finally found its way, making things right
and I saw the ending of a life there in faded black and white.

Obituaries in the paper, we see them all the time.
We see their smiling faces, we read their life’s rhyme.
But do we take the time to realize that they are here no more.
Who’s weeping for them? Who’s knocking at their door?

We’ve grown a little calloused in our search for greater wealth
That we’ve forgotten those who’ve left us in search for better health.
And when our day’s end does find us and we drift into the night
Will anyone read our lives in the newspaper’s faded words of black and white?

Dedicated in Memory of:
Robert Trout
