INDEPENDENCE
(A simple song I wrote)
This past year’s brought many trials
Lots of heartaches, friends and rivals
…I don’t know how I turned the calendar’s page.
Every day, I needed a shoulder.
Every day, my dreams turned colder
…They say life only improves with age.
Here I am, on a different doorstep
Wanting to live, can I take one more step
…To prove that I’m not dependent in ways.
The sky’s exploding, the sky’s on fire
I’ve set my dreams on a burning wire
…Thank God it’s Independence Day.
I’ve watched dreams shatter as my tears streamed down.
Like Roman Candles, I entertained the crowd.
Sparklers, Streamers, and flags galore
Who could possibly ask for more…
Something is missing, something is gone-
Add in the dreams of a lonely one.
We say goodbye, do we say hello.
I look to see you everywhere I go.
…Maybe I will some day.
I’m dependent on a faceless name
As fireworks depend on a faceless flame
…Tonight, I celebrate Independence Day.
The sky’s exploding, the sky’s on fire
Can I make it through tonight? I inquire.
…Does the heart still burn within me?
I’ve made it this far, I’m on my own
Struggling to live, struggling to grow
…Does the heart still dream within me?
I’ve watched dreams shatter as my tears streamed down.
Like Roman Candles, I entertained the crowd.
Sparklers, Streamers, and flags galore
Who could possibly ask for more…
Something is missing, something is gone-
Add in the dreams of a lonely one.
The sky’s exploding, the sky’s on fire
I’ve set my dreams on a burning wire
…Just so I could be with you.
Fireworks end when night turns to dawn.
I’ll remain though you’ll be gone
…I ask, “What can I do?”
Though the night is quiet, my heart’s aglow
I hope, deep down, you enjoyed the show
…Without you, my nights are dark.
Independence Day is my only break
All other days, my love, you forsake.
…For I live dependent upon your heart.
