Subject: Native American heritage

I am very interested in exploring my Native American heritage and learning the traditions of the first inhabitants of the Americas. My paternal great-grandmother was 100% Chickasaw and lived in southern Mississippi. She married a man of African lineage and my grandmother was the result of their union. I never met my great-grandmother, but my grandmother passed away at the age of 94 in 2002. I wish I had inquired a lot more about her parents and her experiences when she was growing up.

It is unfortunate that racism continues to plague our nation, but I believe we have more in common than we all realize. I want to explore my entire heritage, not just my African ancestry. I wouldn't be who I am without the contributions and DNA of those who came before me. It is my hope that my search honors their memory and fosters a new sense of pride in my heritage.
