I too am a "white" flute player and have several flutes which I have added decoration. As long aas the decoration is personal to you and you don't use any symbols that you don't really understand, from another culture, then there shouldn't be a problem. The flute and its music are, in my mind , very personal, and anything that has personal meaning to you should be OK.
