Sam,
As with most of Revelation there are many beliefs of what the 7 churches are. I've heard everything from churches that did exist, do exist, will exist and even that they were hypothetical churches meant to teach a message. I believe that they were real churches. Historical evidence will show that churches existed in these places and that they were important religious communities to the christians. The letters to the seven churches were simply that, letters to those churches. Not that this information can not be taken into account for us and our world, but the letters are not pointing specifically to any church today. We should use the letters to learn and minister, we should not use the letters to jugde any church/denomination around us.
