Well the 144,000 people mentioned in Revelation has been speculated by many to mean the ones chosen to go into Heaven. Some even say that that is the limit to the number of souls that will be saved. This number means neither of the two, but rather is another symbol of Revelation. Here I will break it down for you. In chap. 7 it lists all 12 tribes of Israel. And of these 12 tribes it mentions 12,000 selected from each tribe. In Revelation most if not all of the numbers used have a second meaning. In this case it is most obvious. Twelve stands for the number of tribes in Israel or simply Israel. Ten is a numerical symbol of completness. 144,000 = 10 X 10 X 10 X 12 X 12.
The two twelve represents the tribes of the New Testament and the Old Testament. Therefore the 144,000 refers to the whole of Israel, all of Israel past and present.
