The wording of the question leaves me to believe it is definately Christian orientated so that narrows out several answers. Of course the fact that we have over 1200 denominations of Christianity makes this a bit complicated.
No matter whether your Catholic, a protestant, or any other sub-group of Christianity we all seem to believe that one essential thing will or has saved us and that is the belief in Jesus Christ. People define this in many different ways. Some require ritual acts to show this has occured, such as many Protestant, and some believe that you must do good works, such as the Jehovah's Witnesses. This can not be answered so easily because that is one of the many reasons we have so many denominations. If you are asking for my belief, well, I'd have to say that it is the belief in Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. But no act, no ritual can be done to show this or to prove it. Not just saying it, Not just thinking it, but rather you must Mean it. I say this because many people will say it and even think they mean it, but later they realize that they were wrong. Perhaps I should return to my statement from my info, "many paths, one destination". Perhaps salvation comes to us in different ways to different people.
