Subject: Ten-year series Questions

Here's one I got from the big, thick red book

Which of the following is the best technique to use in order to obtain vrystals of potassium nitrate from an aqueous solution of the compound?

A. Dehydration
B. Dissolution *???*
C. Distillation
D. Evaporation

hmm...since obtaining crystals is wanted, I wanted to choose crystallisation, but it was not given. Is potassium nitrate a solid or liquid??? hmm...

I suppose the BEST answer here is D. But this is NOT a GCE 'O' level question! Some of the questions set by the publisher of the T.Y.S. really, REALLY has lots of problems!!!

If you look at question 34 (a GCE 'O' level question):

Which technique is used to obtain potassium nitrate from its aquesou solution?
A. Chromatograophy
B. Crystallisation
C. Distillation
D. Electrolysis

The answer here is obviously B.

Advise: Do ONLY those GCE questions in your T.Y.S.
