Hi, I read an interesting couple of articles in Eye magazine you may find useful - if you haven't already looked at them that is.
'Stories unfolding in time and space' by Steven Heller - Eye (No 31) 1999
and 'Return of the picture' by Robert Mason - Eye (No 35) 2000.
Let me know if you find anything else, I am in the middle of my degree in illustration and am very interested in this topic relating to Authorship in illustration.
I personally think the idea that there can be more truth in a painting than a photograph is true when you look at work such as Dead Meat by Sue Coe. Knowing that the artist has had to spend sustained time (closely) observing in order to make a sketch gives the image more credance than a photograph which has been snatched through the altered reality of a tiny viewfinder (a quote from Blair Witch Project would be good on this point of altered reality through a viewfinder!).
