Transcript of Chris & JC's interview on KISS 103.5 FM
July 27, 2001
KISS 103.5 FM
posted by Janelle on the *NSYNC *N The Mix Board
Transcribed by Janelle

A day ago KISS announced that they were going to be getting an exclusive live in studio interview with all 5 guys of *NSYNC. They didn’t have many details, so I speculated it was an interview they taped previously or would be a phone interview. To my surprise I was quite wrong, and the guys showed up very early in the morning to co-host! *NSYNC must have some big activities planned while in Chicago. Why else would they come all the way here from the west coast when they have to head right back there tomorrow? One of the things that crossed my mind was their desire to check out the Janet Jackson tour.

DJ Valentine’s (male) show starts at 5AM. I didn’t think the guys would be on that early, but I didn’t want to chance it. (I’m quite tired right now!) The morning show was broadcast from a secret location (a KISS sister station) so that fans wouldn’t surround the studio. However, Valentine gave vague clues all morning as to where they were. Valentine said that *NSYNC was granting only him this interview. He said that he’s been a fan of the group, the music, and the guys from the very beginning and that’s why *NSYNC agreed to this interview. They aren’t going around the country giving these interviews to other stations.

He announced that all the guys were supposed to stop in and take turns talking. JC and Chris were supposed to arrive first. In the regular morning news updates, *NSYNC came up a couple times. They mentioned how Celebrity sold over 1 million albums in its first day of sales! They also mentioned the rumors of Justin and Britney singing together.

JC and Chris popped in the studio just after 7AM. Here is my best attempt at a transcript from their close to 2-hour studio visit. (This took me practically ALL day to transcribe, so I sure hope you read it all and like it.) As it turns out, only JC and Chris talked to KISS. The other three guys were next door doing an interview with someone else. Transcribing a cassette is sure hard…Especially when it’s fast-talking, wacky Chris J Also JC and Chris’ voices sounded similar at parts. They talk over each other so much. Who knew these guys could be so quick thinking, hilarious, and energetic so early in the morning?!?!?

Chicago’s KISS 103.5 FM
Morning Show with DJ Valentine from 5AM-9AM

7:05 - A hypermix of *NSYNC hits plays over the radio to signal that the guys have arrived in the studio.

Valentine – Wait a minute. Hold it. Stop everything.
Chris – Can we start picking out stuff to play? Is this thing (microphone) on?
Valentine – I think it’s on, is it on?
Chris – No.
Chris - Yeah, mine works good.
JC - Boy is this annoying when you’re on the road. Hey listen to this.
Valentine – I’ve got to let them know who’s here. I’ve got to start it off that way.
Chris – Check this out, my mic is broke.
Valentine - Ok. Wait a minute. Stop everything. Can we stop for a second?
JC – It’s flipper. It’s flipper.
Chris – How much do these things cost?
Valentine – Chris just broke the mic. He broke it. It’s done. It’s history.
JC – That’s why we don’t let him out of the house very often.
Valentine – Yeah. Nice going there bro.
JC – You let him out of the cage, you make him sing and dance, you put him right back in.
Chris – That’s it.
Valentine – JC, do you deal with this on a daily basis?
JC – Yes, I do.

Valentine – By the way, from the band NSYNC, JC and Chris in the studio. Let’s give it up! (clapping)
JC – How you guys doing? Hey. And we already broke something.
Radio Intern? – He really broke it, dude.
Valentine – And I thought we’d have the guys by to celebrate the release of the CD, and he trashed the damn microphone. Dude.
Radio Intern? - Look at those pants (JC’s) man. Can I tell you something about those pants man? Those pants are really messed up.
Chris – JC, JC, sssshhhhh. JC, that’s are really embarrassing. Every now and then, you’ve got to walk around like an idiot. Hey, you remember that show The Odd Couple, back in the 70’s? I think that’s where they stole those pants from.
Valentine – They’re curtains from my mom’s house. That’s what they are.
JC? – No man, those pants right there…those were formerly owned by the lady’s man.
Valentine – Can I tell you something?
JC – Yeah, those were nice.
Radio Intern – Yeah, that was a great movie.
JC – That is like one of my favorites right now. We watch it every other day on the bus.
Valentine – Yeah, it was a good movie. I’ll tell you one thing…
JC – We just watched “Lock Stock” last night. Have you seen that? “Lock Stock & 2 Smokin’ Barrels”?
Valentine – Yeah, what is that? Was it good?
Chris – Common, it’s Guy Ritchie. It’s a Guy Ritchie movie. It’s awesome!
Valentine – Guy Ritchie was good, right?
JC - Yeah, it’s like, it’s like…
Chris - Check this out. It’s a really cool story.
JC - It’s like “Snatch” before “Snatch”.
Chris - Yeah, and on the way we watched it on the bus. So, it was like the coolest thing. Cause I’ve seen it like a million times. It’s like my favorite movie. And I wanted show…
JC – And they all talk in the over the top English accent man (spoken with an English accent…LOL). (Still speaking with an English accent) You know, it’s like everything is like…
Chris – (Spoken w/ English accent) Everything’s with knickers…
JC – (Spoken w/ English accent) …and they’ve got like weird words like Jack in the Box…
Chris – Stop. Stop. Stop. Anyways, so we’re watching this movie. It’s like a really cool movie. We get up, and me and JC are sitting in the car…and we’re like “doot-te-doot-te-do” and out of our hotel walks the lead guy from…
JC – The dude from “Lock Stock.”
Chris – He was in “Snatch” and “Lock Stock.” And we were freaking out.
Valentine – Did you talk to him?
Chris – It was like…No, I was too embarrassed.
JC – No, you can’t do that…
Chris – I was scared.
JC – It’s like you no…
Chris - Have you seen the movie? He’s intimidating.
JC – Yeah, he’s pretty tough.
Valentine – Dude, you’re like the biggest band on the planet. You guys can’t talk to some actor?
Chris – He just looks tough. He scares me.
JC – Have you seen the guy? He like trains. It’s like you never know.
Chris – It’s kinda like, you know, I don’t know.
JC – Mom.

Chris – And anyways, hello? Is this on?
Valentine – But you know there are some guys out there that look so tough, and when you meet them in person you find out they’re not.
JC - Like the lady’s man.
Valentine – You still into that stuff? You into the WWF? You still like that?
JC – Actually, you know what? I probably shouldn’t say this. I’m actually a fan of the UCF now. I guess it’s like a little controversy.
Valentine – I don’t even know what that is. What is that?
Chris – Common! What is UCF?
JC – Oh, excuse me. UFC.
Chris – Oh, the UFC. Well, somebody been in Orlando a little bit too long. That’s University of Central Florida.
JC – OK!
Valentine – Hit him.
Chris – Eh! Wait, wait, wait. The last time we were in here, we got into a really bad fight.
JC – Yeah, we did.
Chris – And we’re not going to start that again.
JC – And I’m not gonna hurt him too bad this time.
Valentine – Man, people were talking about it.
Chris – We calmed down.
Valentine – It was on the Internet and everything.
Chris - We’ve been a lot calmer lately.
JC – We’ve been, we’ve been, yes.
Valentine – Since the band has been together have you guys had many fights?
JC – Only…
Chris – Well, there was this one time in band camp…
Valentine – Did you really?
Chris - …and we were fighting over…
Valentine – Was it a piccolo or a flute?
Chris – Put it this way. This is a cast on my hand, and it’s there for a reason.
Valentine – Dude, yeah.
Chris – And for your information, it was an oboe.
JC – What did I say? Shut up!
Chris – Yeah, that’s right. You all are scared.

7:25 AM – Interview Resumes

Valentine – It’s Valentine in the morning. This is KISS FM. We’re gonna be a bit more calmer now. We’d like to take a phone call. OK. Let’s take a phone call. Here we go.
Caller – Hi guys!
JC & Chris – Hi.
Caller – How you doin’?
Valentine – Great.
Caller – Are you having a good day?
Valentine – Absolutely.
Chris – Yeah, it’s alright, you know. Let me tell you about my day…no, I’m just kidding. Go ahead.
Caller – Well, we all know that Joey would want to be Superman if he could be any superhero…
Chris – Yeah.
Caller – OK, but what about the rest of you guys?
Chris – Um, you mean JC or I?
Valentine – Well, it’s JC and Chris that are in here.
Caller – Both of you. Both of you.
Chris – We’ll make something up for the other guys if you want us to.
Valentine – Yeah, go ahead and make something up for ‘em.
Caller – Go ahead.
Chris – Justin would be Wonderwoman. I think he just likes bracelets or something.
Valentine – Yeah, OK. What else?
Chris – Lance…
JC – Lance would be Pluto.
Chris – Lance would be Pluto…
JC – Cause he doesn’t need any speaking parts.
Chris – Yeah, and then uh…JC, JC would probably be Fartman.
JC – Uh, I will not Fart, man.
Valentine – What would you be?
Chris – I would be Cool Guy. I’m gonna make my new superhero.
Valentine – Because you are cool guy.
Caller – And you are cool guy.
Chris – Oh. Stop it. Not really. Trust me. Hang out on a bus for a month.
JC – What’d I say? Shut up!
Valentine – Hang on sweetie.
Chris – No, actually, I’d probably be Tony The Tiger.
JC – Chris, Chris…in all honesty, he sweats Spiderman pretty hard.
Chris – Yeah, he’s my idol. You would be Captain America.
Valentine – (Mumbling to himself in the background.)
JC? – I would be Captain Crunch.
Chris? – No, you’d be Shazzam.
Valentine – I don’t even have to be here. I could work out.
Chris – Actually, you know what’s a good one?…
JC – (Directed toward Valentine) What are you talking about over there?
Chris – (JC & Chris laugh, but keep on talking a hundred miles an hour.) …Do you remember Adam Aunt?
JC - Hey, we’re interesting. Look at us!
Chris – Adam Aunt…Is that a superhero?
JC – Pay attention when you do the interview.
Chris – I know he’s a cartoon, but is he like a superhero, too? Adam Aunt?
JC – Adam Aunt.
Chris – That’s a cool one. Because he’s like little. You can sneak into a girls’ locker room and stuff.

Radio Intern? – Where are you? Chime in!
Valentine – I’m not here.
Radio Intern – You can do it Val!
Valentine – Thank you.
Chris – I like your radio face. That’s really cool. (Laughter)
Chris – I like the fact that…
Valentine – Yes Chris?
Chris – you’re such a nerd whenever we’re not on the air and then when we get on the air, you get that face…that serious face.
Valentine – That sly face.
Chris – and then you start talking (mimicking Valentine) “like this.”
Valentine – No, it’s just because I can remember from the very beginning…
Chris – (sarcastic) And we’re really interested in what you’re saying. (Laughter)
Valentine – (still being covered up by Chris & JC) They’re not even listening to me…they don’t give a hoot. It’s like I can just walk out of the studio, pick up phones, and leave them talk.
Chris – (Just talking to talk over Valentine). I’m just the coolest guy.
Valentine – OK, you’re talking to JC & Chris. Go ahead.
Chris? – And I’ve got a button to push.
Chris & JC – Hello?
(Valentine thinks he accidentally hung up on the caller)
Caller – Yeah, I’m here.
Chris – Cool, what’s up?
Caller – Hey, what’s up guys?
JC – How you doin’?
Chris – Our spirits are up. That’s…I’m sorry…go ahead. (Laughter)
Valentine – Jeez!
Caller – Well, first of all, I’d like to say that you guys are awesome.
JC – Thank you.
Caller – And I’m really looking forward to getting your album.
JC & Chris – Yeah, cool. Thank you.
Caller – I met you guys in October of ’98, and I got three of you guys’ autographs.
JC - And you’re still talking to us?
Chris - Who? Which three? Which three?
Valentine – Which three did you get hun?
Caller – Uh, it was Joey, JC, and Lance.
JC – See, you weren’t there Chris.
Chris – No actually…
Caller – No actually Chris and Justin were there, but…
JC – They were too stuck up, right?
Chris – We have attitudes.
Caller – Nooo.
JC – Yeah, Chris has got an attitude.
Caller – No, you guys looked kinda busy cause I think you guys had dates.
JC – Oooh.
Chris – Whoa! Yeah! Was she hot?
Valentine – She was hot. She was my mom.

Valentine – NSYNC is in the studio. Line 12, let’s go. Hello?
Caller – Hello.
Chris – Hello.
Caller – Hi, I’m here with my friends Christine and Sarah…and we want to know what is your favorite song on the new CD?
JC – Oh man. You know what, that’s like…
Chris – That’s a tough one.
JC – We love this. Like this is in our opinion our best record to date, and it’s really really hard to pick.
Chris – At least it’s our newest.
JC – Yeah, it’s our newest record to date.
Chris - It’s definitely our newest one. I’ll definitely go on record saying it’s our newest.
Valentine – Yes, it’s the newest, yes, absolutely.
JC – It’s really hard to pick because there is something about every song that we really like. I actually, if I had to pick one that’s pretty unique, …
Chris – Don’t say it. I know what you’re gonna say.
Valentine – No, you have to say it. You really do.
Chris – Ok, say it.
JC – I would say the last track on the album because it’s such a feel good song. It’s called, “Do Your Thing.”
Caller – Yeah.
JC – I really like it.
Chris – Never mind. That’s not what I thought you were going to say. Sorry.
Valentine – So, you pick 13 if you had to pick one.
JC – I pick 13. And you know why I also picked 13?
Valentine – Why did you pick 13?
JC - Because this is the first time we actually put 13 tracks on the album here. We usually have 12. We threw an extra one on.
Chris – Isn’t 13 usually unlucky though?
Valentine – No, it’s really lucky. That was my birthday. The 13th of January actually.
Chris – Really? Oh. There you go.
Valentine – Would you mind if I played a bit of it?
JC – You can’t do that because…
Chris – Yeah, why not? Why don’t you just…you know what? Alright.
Valentine – What? Why can’t I do it?
Chris – It’s your show.
Valentine – Yeah, it’s my show. If I want to play the entire…
JC – You know what? I’m gonna go next door and hang out with everybody else. (Lots of talking and noise)
JC – You just took the comedy too far.
Valentine – Get ‘em out of my belly.
JC – There’s like a line here, and you’re like way over there.
Valentine – I’m gone. I’m gonna play a little bit of this and we’re gonna come back in a second. Hang on. (Plays a lengthy clip of “Do Your Thing”)

7:48 AM - Traffic, Weather, News, “NSYNC in the Sand”, Commercials, and Songs

8:07 AM – Interview Resumes

Valentine – I think that mine’s better. Joey’s showing his tush right now. Baring his tush right now. Go ahead.
Justin? – Joey’s gonna pull out his…
Everyone – (Groans with disgust!)
JC? – We have got the battle of the plumbers.
Radio Intern? – Put your pants on Valentine.
Chris – Alright, seriously, I need therapy.
Chris – I don’t know, but they’re really trying to conduct a serious interview in there and you’re really screwing it up ..
Valentine – See, that’s the thing. In here, all hell is breaking loose. In the other room right now, there’s an interview going on…
JC – Look at…they’re all sitting down nicely. They’re smiling when they talk.
Valentine – You want to get a load of that? I’ll give you that.
(Valentine pulls his pants down or something to more growns.)
Chris – Oh, jeez, look at that. Get out the paddle.
Valentine – You like that stuff? That’s what I’m talking about.
Valentine – So, how’s everything going?
Chris – I need some Dramamine or something. I got motion sickness.
Valentine – Everything ok?
Chris – I don’t know, but the funny thing is, your camera…
JC – was pointed right at Joey.
Chris - So, Joey’s butt is now going to be on Ebay.
JC - And he doesn’t even know it.
JC & Chris – Hey Joe. Everyone wave to Joe. Hey Joe! What’s up buddy?

Valentine – So what track…we listened to 13 “Do Your Thing”…
Chris – Yeah, let’s listen to the one JC did.
Valentine – Which one?
Chris – “Game Over.” That’s the coolest.
Valentine – Number 3? Alright #3. Hold on.
JC – The breakthrough.
Chris – And I can tell you something. This is just off the top of my head and random. Not that most of my thoughts aren’t, but….
Valentine – Yeah?
Chris – Yeah. But I’m gonna be in a comic book.
Valentine – Are you seriously?
Chris – I’m really excited about that. A really good friend of mine, Dan Frega, is drawing Wolverine. A couple of the issues of Wolverine. And he’s drawing me and Justin and well, I can’t say who else because it’s a surprise.
Valentine – Surprise. Yeah, top secret.
Chris – But yeah, he’s drawing us in the comic book. We’re just like people in the background, but you can definitely tell it’s us. And I think that’s like the coolest thing because that’s like comic book history.
Valentine – Chris, you know the weird thing about you is that every time you come by, you kind of take over my show. And I think you’re pretty funny. I’ve done stand-up in the past, and I think you’d be pretty good on stage.
Chris – You know what? I couldn’t do it.
Valentine – Why not?
Chris – I don’t have that kind of sense of humor. I just don’t get it. I’d stand up there in front of the mic and just go, “Well, someone say something so I can say something funny.”
Valentine – That’s funny.
Chris – But that’s not funny because I’d just stand there and nobody would say anything.
JC – (Silent during this whole argument) I think you guys should fight about it.
Valentine – Kick his ass. Dude, how tall are you, seriously?
Chris – That’s a threat. 5’10”. Why?
Valentine – 5’10”, 6 foot 13 right here.
JC? – Really? No kidding? 13?
Chris – Is that with the wooden leg?
Valentine – Yeah, it’s pretty amazing.
Chris – Holy smokers.
Valentine – That’s actually my third wooden leg.
Chris – OK, calm down.
JC? – Again, I need a Dramamine. I’m getting sick.

Valentine – Ok, “The Game is Over”…cut #3 on Celebrity.
(Plays short clip of ending of “The Game is Over”)
JC – There’s that Pac-Man sound right there.
Chris – That’s the coolest.
Valentine – Dude, that is cool.
Chris – That was me at the end.
Valentine – That’s you at the end? Do it again. Do it again.
Chris – (making weird noise) But you don’t hear that part. That’s the part you don’t hear. I’m not talking about the Game Over. I’m talking about…
JC – we did the little edit at the end.
Chris – You know what the new stuff they do with, you know, with stuff. You can change voices and stuff. I mean look at some of the people/singers out there that do that.
Valentine – I’ve heard stories. Cool. Excellent.
JC – Mom.

8:26 AM – After hypermix of *NSYNC hits, Interview Resumes

Valentine – Joey just took a picture of my bare tush. It’s great. So, let’s talk about the charity and Vegas.
Chris – We have a charity game. Yeah, we sure do.
JC – We do it every year. It’s Challenge for the Children. But this time, we made it a little bit bigger and better and more exciting and more fun for everybody.
Chris – Yeah, the basketball is bigger.
JC – Well yeah. You play with beach balls now instead of basketballs.
Chris - The hoop is little bit larger.
JC – The hoop’s a little bit larger, and it’s all in the pool.
Chris – Yeah.
JC – No. So, you know, come on down. Bring a friend. Bring some clam dip…it’ll be great.
Chris – It’s a two day event.
JC – It’s for charity, so it’s a two day event this time. All the proceeds go to charity. There’s gonna be a bunch of celebrities and a bunch of athletes there. We have a basketball game. We’re having like a whole field day. Remember like elementary school where you had field day? We’re doing it! Yes! We’ve got like sumo-wrestling, and scavenger hunts, and just like craziness, so…
Chris – The best thing is that it all goes to charity. We usually wouldn’t be up here peddling things like this, but you know send your money.
JC – Send it because it’s a really good cause.
Chris – Children will benefit from your donations.
JC – Because we don’t get any of it. We have other things to worry about besides taking people’s money.
Valentine – You know what I’ve noticed about you guys?
JC - And buy your tickets to the game.
Chris - Come join in the fun and festivities at the 3rd annual Challenge for the Children this weekend.
Chris – One weekend only. Brought to you by your local friends at the….
Valentine – Place.
JC – At the NSYNC show.
Chris – Give me a sponsor.
Valentine – Anybody got a sponsor?
JC? – KISS FM should sponsor it. There you go.
Valentine – We’re the sponsor. There you go.
Chris – (someone calls from the back) Robert Deniro???
Everyone – Whoa!
Valentine – I’m a major talent in this town. I just don’t need this.
Chris – Can we just take a picture of your face and put it on the Internet?
Valentine – There’s a situation…I keep lifting my shirt, dropping my pants. It’s a situation everybody’s very excited about.
Chris - You noticed they only yell when you lift your shirt though.
JC – Yeah.
Chris – And it’s not a good yell, so don’t take that the wrong way.
Valentine – I’m very turned on by that.
Chris – That’s fear. (Laughter)
Valentine – So, thanks for coming by.
JC? – Oh, they’re saying wrap over here.
Chris – That’s it? OK.
Valentine – Who’s giving me the wrap? You givin’ me the rap Chris?
(Chris starts to beat box)
(Crowds are developing outside the secret studio, so they want to get the guys out of there)
Chris – (Spontaneously rapping to beat boxing from Valentine) Jive don’t want us to go live. Valentine’s trying to drop a beat, but all I think is that…
JC – You’ve got smelly feet.

8:30 AM - Traffic, Weather, News, “NSYNC in the Sand”, Commercials, and Songs

8:44 AM - Interview Resumes

Valentine – Line 22. You’re on with NSYNC. Go ahead.
Caller – Hey.
Valentine – Hey. Say hi to the guys. JC & Chris are here. Say hi.
Caller – Hi guys.
JC – How you doin’?
Caller – Ohmigod. You guys are beautiful. I just thought I’d let you know.
JC – (in a funny voice) Thank you very much.
Caller – Ok, my question is…I’m so nervous I can’t even ask the question.
Chris – Here, I’ll ask it for you.
Caller – Do you guys still get nervous before appearances or performances?
JC – Yes, definitely. Like we just did Jay Leno or whatever and we were pretty much like pale before we went on because it was our first big interview I guess on Jay Leno. So we were all like, “Ok man, you’re gonna do good. Uh, don’t suck.”
Caller – Oh.
Valentine – Yeah, but guys, how many times have you interviewed with me? And then you go on Jay. It should be pretty simple.
Chris – Pretty easy, right? It should be cake after that.
JC – You know what?…
Chris – The only thing I get nervous about here is the lashings. That’s the only thing I get nervous about.

Valentine – OK. Wait a minute. We’re going to play some more tracks when you guys leave so you hear it in the car (They never played anymore.) But over the years, we’ve watched you go from the very beginning to where you are right now. You’ve remained wonderful guys and great personalities. You’re a freak, but otherwise…
JC – Ah see, I’m the nice guy.
Chris – Don’t talk to JC like that. I have to defend him.
Valentine – You really have remained wonderful guys. Can we give them a round of applause?
Chris – Oh yeah. It’s always a pleasure coming here.
Valentine - We’re passing some old photos of way back when. One of their first debuts.
Chris – That was a fun day.
JC – This one is black and white. It’s like artsy.
Chris – We’ve been out that long?
Valentine – You have.
Chris – Black and white pictures? The pineapple haircut.
Valentine – Yeah, I shoot in black and white sometimes. It’s cool. Chicks dig it.
JC – It’s very cool.
Valentine – (Giving JC advice) Seriously, they do.
Chris – And here I’m thinking like they didn’t have color cameras back then.
Valentine – Hey, come on in so I can show you something before you leave.
Chris & JC – Nooo!
Valentine – Come here. I want to show you something.
Chris – Nooo! Nooo. Get out. Please don’t.
(Things go crazy once all the guys are in the same room. Valentine talks about some product he uses to wax something.)
Valentine – Well, we better let you guys go.
JC? – See, even Justin came and visited you guys.
Chris - Wow, that’s important.
Valentine – You guys are good. I appreciate all of you coming in. I’m gonna cry.
Joey? – It’s just a party in here.
Valentine – We have to get a group shot live on the radio. Over here you guys. Come on over here.
Chris – Yeah. Live on the radio…let’s take a picture. (sarcastic) Yeah, pictures make great radio. Yo, excuse us for like 8 seconds. We’re taking a picture. That’s the cheesiest way I’ve ever been swindled into getting a picture in my life.
Joey – Someone grabbed my butt. Valentine stuck his finger…
Valentine – That was not my finger.
Everyone – Whoa! (Craziness)
Lance? – Ok, they’re making us leave now.
JC? - We’ve got to go, dude. They’re like yanking us.
Chris – Celebration!
JC – See, I think that is the smartest thing Chris has ever done…throw water in a room full of electronics. I love that game. You should see him stick his tongue in a toaster.
Radio Intern? – Have fun guys.
Valentine – Thank you very much. See you later. So, now my show sucks. They’re leaving. I lost my whole vibe. *NSYNC’s leaving.

8:48 AM - *NSYNC has left the building
