I'd love to see some of you guys hit AO - just be sure you go with the evil ways of OMNI if you try it out, and then we can hang. ;)
Again I just didn't get excited over DAoC because.. it looks to .. well, expected. If that makes sense. Probably I am talkin' gibberish again. ;)
Doc you might like Engineers, the type of character I chose. Ihave built up a pretty good android to fight for me, and within a few levels I should be able to upgrade to a whole new bot line, and get a nasty-looking clawed battle machine. Right now my guy looks a lot like the androids in Star Wars: Episode One. Heh heh.
Some stuff I can do in addition to combat, due to trade skills:
* I can take gems or chunks of Notum (a mineral unique to Rubi-Ka, the gameworld) and use a gem cutter to increase their value about 250%. Makes a nice profit.. and, for cutting 4 gems I get about the same EXP as if I killed 1 monster. Not bad.
* The gem can be sold or...
1. Find a blank ring template or loot ring.
2. Melt down the ring with an ore refiner.
3. Use a 'wire-drawing' machine on the ingot that makes.
4. Use a personal furnace to refine the strung ring.
5. Add the cut gem to make a fine piece of jewlery.
6. Sell the ring for about 12x the value of the gem.
* I can create and use 'trimmers' for robots, which are devices that increase or decrease their aggresiveness, change how much they hit for, dodge, etc.
* I can find 'instruction discs' as loot, and then using them I can create Nano Crystals for specific nano formulas which, when used, give you a new 'spell' to cast.
* I can build most types of weapons in the game, given the right parts and instructions.
* I can find 'robot junk' from mechanized mobs and using tools convert it into nano-sensors. These an then be turned into various things such as martial-arts assisting programs, or targeting systems which give ranged weapons characters an increased chance for a critical hit.
* I can combine 'nano-clusters' with basic implant shells to make useful body implants, which people can have surgically installed to permanently increase skills.
I have only done some of this, as the startup costs for this class are kidna steep (buying new robots and all), but the complexity of the trade skills is kinda cool. So far I have cut some gems we all sold for decent cash, and bumbled my way through making some implants which helped me out a bit.
You get experience for all the trade skill stuff, and I liked that. Not a lot but.. enough that you feel it isn't a joke like in AC.
Oh.. the XP system is way way different in AO which took getting used to. I am level 29 at the moment (you level fast.. really, you do, I haven't played THAT much) and it is only 27,000xp for me to get a level.
anyway.
