Subject: In God we trust!!

June 27, 2000 - The Colorado State Board of Education plans to enter the national fray over religious language in public schools on July 6, when it will consider encouraging schools to post the national motto - "In God We Trust."

The nonbinding resolution, authored by the board's Republican chairman, Clair Orr of Greeley, would allow local school officials to follow or ignore the state board's advice.
Orr said his resolution is not religious, nor does it promote religion. Rather, it would simply put the phrase, ordered printed on U.S. coins by President Lincoln in 1864 and made the national motto by President Eisenhower in 1956, in public schools.

The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the legality of the national motto, most recently denying a 1996 appeal by a Colorado group looking to remove it from U.S. coinage.

"It's not forcing anybody to do anything," Orr said. "It's just a resolution. It'll only be controversial if somebody wants to make it that way. And if they do, they've got other agendas, probably, in mind."

But atheists say the motto's "We" does not include them.
