Hi Rob:
I'm sure there's a lot of excitement at Manhattan, and rightfully so as I think the Jaspers will probably be picked third in the MAAC preseason poll, likely behind Iona and Niagara. I haven't talked to Coach Gonzalez in the off season, so I don't know about injuries or possible defections. But there's a strong returning cast and I know Gonzo will continue to prove he's an outstanding recruiter. Gonzo followed up his first "rags to riches" season with a solid campaign that had Manhattan looking absolutely scary in the 19-point romp over Iona in the regular-season finale. I still think Manhattan would have taken out Siena in the MAAC tournament opener if Justin Jackette didn't suffer his unfortunate injury before the tournament. Jackette should be back stronger than ever and David Holmes should be much better after playing most of last year. Von Damien Green proved he's one of the best point guards in the MAAC and Jared Johnson has always been one of my favorites. A scrappy kid. If Jason Benton is good as they've been saying and the new recruits come on, the Jaspers will definitely have a winning record. But Manhattan is going to miss - big time - Durelle Brown, a quality player and person. Gonzo is doing a great job and is an ambassador for Manhattan wherever he goes. He's also a reporter's dream interview. Best quotes on the East Coast.
Iona has got to be preseason No. 1 even without Earl Johnson, Nakiea Miller - huge losses. Also, Phil Grant graduated and played well last year. But with Dyree Wilson, Courtney Fields, Greg Jenkins, Maceo Wofford and Leland Norris back, the Gaels will be tough to beat. If newcomer Solomon Brown and Wofford can run the point and newcomers Ramel Allen and Charles Henson can do some damage in the paint, Iona could get that third straight MAAC title. Niagara's going to miss the scoring of gunner Demond Stewart, but they'll be good if senior guard Daryl Greene shakes off last year's woeful year and plays up to his potential. James Reaves is a stud center and Michael Schmidt can fill it up. Also, Canisius should be strong with Andrew Bush and Brian Dux leading the way. Marist is my sleeper pick with the best backcourt in the MAAC with Rick Smith and Sean Kennedy. Almost forgot Rider, who has the best player in the league back in Mario Porter. Don Harnum is an excellent coach, but he's has had some disastrous MAAC tournament results. Maybe this is the year for Rider to get a few breaks in the tournament.
