Dear RPM:
Thanks for trying to get me into trouble with Mr. Ruland. LOL On expansion: There has been some talk about Holy Cross and a few other schools in the past, but nothing hot right now that I know of. Ten teams is good for scheduling (18 conference games). If you had any more, you'd probably have to split the MAAC into divisions, which I don't like. I like playing every school twice in the regular season. Plus, it's a great 8-team league, with apologies to sad sacks St. Peter's and Loyola. Hopefully, Bob Leckie and Scott Hicks will get them back to respectable soon. As far as dealing with Ruland, he's got to be the most accessible coach in the country. The guy is available night and day on his cell. The only time I couldn't get him in the past three years was during the NCAA tournament last year for a few days when there was all that stuff going on with Seton Hall. Now that he's got a long-term deal, I'm sure we won't have that problem getting him again. Right, Jeff. Though Ruland is great to work with, we've had a few disagreements over things I've written in the past. Hey, that happens with any coach. But Jeff lets you know when he's not happy and then he turns the page. I'd much rather have that than have a coach who holds a grudge for an entire year or never returns your calls. The only MAAC coach who wouldn't return my calls was Siena's Mike Deane, but I don't have to worry about that any more because he's at Lamar in lovely Beaumont, Texas.
