Dear D-73:
I didn't see Ruland's big game in the Garden, but I saw him go head-to-head with Army strong man Gary Winton several times when they were paired against one another. It was coach K vs. Jim Valvano. Some real wars. Winton held his own against Ruland, no matter what the big guy says. Of course, Iona winning 3 of the last 4 MAAC tournament championship games was something to witness. Two of them came against Siena at the Pepsi Arena in Albany. So much for the home-court advantage! I'll never forget Dyree Wilson coming in to bail out the Gaels in the title game two years ago after Tariq Kirksay went down in the first half with an injury. The 97-98 season was special because Iona had the nation's longest winning streak at 15 straight. John McDonald's 35-foot buzzer beater to beat Manhattan at Mulcahy that season was special. It's the only time I can remember almost getting stampeded by students rushing the floor. Best game I ever saw a Gael have was Sean Green's 43-point performance in a MAAC tournament semifinal game in 1991 against, who else?, Siena. Iona lost the title the next night against St. Peter's, which turned out to be the last game for classy coach Gary Brokaw.
