Motorhead ‘Sweet Revenge’

Hello victims! I can almost taste it,
It’s the need to see you die,
You thought you had it made,
Well here’s your final shock surprise,
How do you like it, my unfaithful friend?
How do you like it?
How do you like my Sweet Revenge?

Turn the key in the door,
No-one close to hear you scream,
You’ll never imagine the pain,
Even in your foulest dreams,
How do you like that invitation my friend?
How do you like that?
That’s what I call my Sweet Revenge.

So sweet to see you,
Writhe and crawl and scream for life, but I can’t listen now,
I’m too busy with the knife,
I don’t hear you laughing, my dismembered friend
I don’t hear you laughing,
You don’t like my Sweet Revenge.

The scene opens in Enigma’s familiar car. It is the daytime, and Enigma is ill at ease. His head is tilted slightly and his arms are tensely gripping the steering wheel. The car is travelling needlessly fast through a sub-urban area of a city. The city could be anywhere in the developed world: England, France, America, Germany, Italy or Australia everything is generically sub-urban. It seems to be quite early in the morning as no one is about and all the drive ways have shining cars parked carefully sitting in them, in all the windows the curtains are closed and the morning dew is glinting on the grass in the impeccably kept front gardens that are bordered with repulsive fences and hedges. The sky is blotched with grey clouds and the horizon is still smeared with red. The CD player is playing Bad Religion ‘New America’. Enigma’s head twitches left and he looks out of the window at the rows of houses. His mouth twists into a smile, yet his eyes remain thoughtfully vacant. He turns to look at the road again and the hollow smile disappears as quickly as it had emerged.

Enigma: I know. I know why. Pointless. This is beginning to agitate me. Why does The Fallen annoy Maniac so much? I know and that irritates me too. Ho much does The Fallen resemble Dark Demon? The Fall, Dark Dayz. Make the connection. The other resemblance is that I beat The Fallen just like I always beat Dark Demon. Enigma’s face again registers a smile for a few seconds before it disappears. Don’t bother to argue against that point either of you. Don’t whine that it was the Scream Killer’s fault. Don’t tell me in a manner-of-fact tone that the majority of defeats were mine officially. You can’t tell me anything to that tune that I don’t already know. Demon, I see you’re to referee my title shot against Kid Extreme. I just thought I’d take this opportunity to quickly express my thanks to the ever-wise president of this company, who pays all our pay checks. You had to mess with it didn’t you? You felt compelled to ruin Kid Extreme’s day. Now it won’t be about him at all, it will be all about Dark Demon and me. The question isn’t ‘Who will win between Kid Extreme and Enigma?’ it’ll be ‘What will happen between Enigma and Dark Demon?’ Do you think that is fair? Think about him, I mean what happens when I’m against an insignificant and Demon is added? The insignificant is annihilated and we spend the match taking out our grievances on one another. Enigma is close to laughter. Close. What a shame, eh?

Enigma takes a recordable CD out of the CD player and replaces it in the glove compartment, then turns off the player with a click. His wrist is still bandaged, the injury that removed him from the Dark Alliance implosion match-up with Dark Demon and Maniac. The match when Maniac won his World Title back. The injury those two jealous members of the roster inflicted. There is a man walking along the sidewalk carrying a briefcase. Enigma brakes sharply next to him and he jumps at the screech it produces. Enigma leans out of the window, and the man takes an uneasy step back. Enigma’s tone of voice changes to a mocking inquisitive standard English. His head is tilted and all of his concentration is directed straight at the unfortunate man. He is tall with light brown hair and average features. His suit is grey and there is nothing remarkable about him, except for how unremarkable he is. His expression is that of someone who is repelled by what he sees. He doesn’t quite know what to do, or what to expect, or what to think.

Enigma: Excuse me sir but may I ask if you watch wrestling?

Man: Well…Y-yes I do.

Enigma: Could I possibly ask which company you enjoy the most?

Man: The MCW.

The man is keeping his answers short as he has realized to his surprise that he is stuttering nervously.

Enigma: So you recognize me?

Man: Y-yes. You’re Enigma.

Enigma: Correct. Are you aware of the match at the pay-per-view I am involved in?

Man: Y-yes. With Dark Demon.

Enigma: Thank you for your time. I do have your permission to use your face on international television don’t I?

The man notices the television camera and is taken aback. Enigma drives off with his distinct smile leaving the man speechless on the kerb. He has a small satisfied look on his face.

Enigma: Kid Extreme and the Canadian Title no longer have any meaning at Halloween Horror. Will Enigma be able to overcome Dark Demon and defeat Kid Extreme? Will Dark Demon be violent toward Enigma? The card seemed to suggest that he might have forgotten our…disagreements. There’s about as much chance of that as there is of Maniac coming clean and becoming a perfect Catholic. Ah…bad choice of comparison. Oh well. Wait, I was saying that I know at the start and I didn’t tell you what. I’m sorry if you’ve waited for that. Enigma is still speaking in the mocking tone. I was going to say that I know why I’m pitted against Little J this week. It’s to give Dark Demon a chance to show his allegiance. Just how laughable the suggestion of his helping me. Again, another member of the roster used. Puts things in perspective for you doesn’t it Little J? However important you think you are, you are still a tool. Even if officially Little J defeated Enigma, what are the chances of you beating me clean? Don’t answer that. It won’t happen, I say tempting fate. Dark Alliance. It’s time to put it to rest. Dark Demon and Enigma, the last Dark Alliance battle. It will finally be put to rest. It should never have happened in the first place. Postponement, and I’ve harped on this many, many times before. Maniac, Demon, Enigma. What were we thinking? It’s time to settle things.

Enigma gets a CD out and puts it on. Motorhead’s ’Ace of Spades’ blasts out of the sound system at full volume. Enigma begins to relax slightly, leaning his head on the headrest. He drums his hands on the steering wheel. The scene fades out.

The scene fades back in a standard multi-story car park and the sky is beginning to darken. This footage is from a security camera network, the picture is in black and white. Huge shadows cover most of the cars. The lights are starting to come on in a random order. The sound of Stereomud’s ‘End of Everything’ can be heard approaching. Enigma’s car emerges from a shadow and parks across two spaces. The sound abruptly cuts out and Enigma steps out, locking the door. He walks towards the glowing green exit sign when a figure steps out of the dark. The figure can be seen as a silhouette, but from the silhouette you can tell it’s a woman from the shape of the body. Enigma seems slightly taken aback in the first time in living memory. They walk back towards the car and sit on the front, distinctly not looking at each other. The light above them suddenly flickers to life revealing the woman’s identity. It is Helena, Enigma’s ex-girlfriend. All that the mic picks up is the unintelligible sound of human speech when you cannot make out the words. Whatever they are saying it appears to be a high-strung conversation. They don’t realize they are being filmed. The angle switches to a front view. Enigma has an emotion on his face, genuinely. He appears to be content for the first time since, well, Helena left. Helena seems simply to be relieved. They move together and express their emotions with a passionate kiss that lasts a while then they move into the car and drive off with Helena’s head resting on Enigma’s shoulder. The footage stops bluntly. Their relationship didn’t take much to kick-start. There obviously wasn’t much of a problem, or the problem has evaporated. Is this bad or good for Enigma’s MCW career? Will it distract him from his matches or will it spur him on? Only time will tell…

Nirvana ‘Pennyroyal Tea’

Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld
So I can sigh eternally
I’m so tired I can’t sleep
I’m a liar and a thief

Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
I’m anemic royalty
I’m on warm milk and laxatives
Cherry-flavoured antacids

(long live Kurt Cobain)
