I have chosen the upcoming Thomas Eakins exhibit opening at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in October (Oct 4-Jan 6).

This exhibit is a retrospective of Eakins work as an important Philadelphia artist who found success after the Civil War until his death in 1916. Eakins was associated with the American Realist movement. His works focused on athletics and portraits of local Philadelphia characters.

In bringing this into my elementary classroom, I might consider using his art in a Philadephia History unit. Or, I could use his sports-related paintings in a unit discussing how sports interact with culture and how important athleticism is to culture and individual development. (The children could paint each other in various sports "poses.") Finally, since Eakins was one of the first artists to use a camera, his work can be connected to an "inventions" unit.
