Subject: Redshirts?

Can someone please explain the concept and benefit of redshirting players. I live in Canada and know jack squat about college football - but I'm learning!

I think I know what it means - but I fail to see the benefit of it.

When a player is in college, he can only play 4 years. Redshirting allows a player to practice with the team, but not play in any games for the first year. This gives him experience and leaves him open to play 4 more years.

The benefit is in the extra experience and knowledge of the team he gets during that redshirt year.

Is there a definite date that a college must make the decision to redshirt a football player or does that player have to wait out the whole season and consider himself redshirted if he didn't play in any game?

about that, you said his first year, im not sure if this is true in real life but you can redshirt a player any year if they have not been redshirted before. i.e. you could redshirt a senior, junior, sophmore, and of course a freshman

it is also true in real life. players in college can even apply for a medical redshirt if they are hurt and miss the year.
