The Sexiest Swallow
Asia's Sexiest Female Star is just an old-fashioned girl looking for Mr Right. She is between boyfriends now, Zhao Wei tells NOORSILA ABDUL MAJID
Four hours of interviews and photo shoots - plus the scorching heat of the Valley's afternoon - have probably taken their toll on actress Zhao Wei.
The star is having one of those mortal moments when, like the rest of us, she must be thinking:"There's gotta be a better way of making a living than this."
Her patch of gloom happens to fall over our scheduled meeting. "She says she's very tired and wants to call it a day," a representative from Marie France Bodyline, the slimming expert which the mainland China actress is endorsing, says apologetically.
But the trooper in Zhao rallies, and relents, after persuasion and re-assurance that we are friendly media which has interviewed her before.
"Just give me the clothes that you want her to wear and let her decide, OK," her personal assistant says, sotto voce. "Please do whatever that's necessary to perk her up."
"My first interview started at 10 this morning," explains the 27-year-old actress, adjusting her frilly, revealing Blumarine skirt. "Perhaps we can have a casual chat while your photographer is taking pictures of me?"
The obvious question is why the cute-as-a-button actress, voted recently as Asia's Sexiest Female Star by FHM Singapore's edition, has reservations about clothes that would fit with that image.
In fact, she demurs from wearing a lacy, satin Blumarine skirt that would make eyes pop, to put it mildly.
She has doubts as well about letting her hair down, for a wild, raunchy look. Asia's Sexiest Female Star is coy about measuring up to the title.
"I wouldn't have stood a chance of winning that title if wasn't for Marie France," laughs Zhao Wei. "Marie France has created the sexy side of me. I get to wear swimsuits... and show what a wonderful job Marie France has done for my body."
It has not been an easy task, though, to re-invent Zhao Wei as la bella figura, and adopt the wardrobe to go with her curves.
"They (Marie France) had to spend a lot of time coaching me how to wear those sexy swimsuits and dresses," admits the actress, who hails from the northern Chinese state of Anhui. "At first, I didn't feel comfortable wearing them. But I told myself that it's part of my job and I had to do it. So, I have become used to wearing them - just for Marie France-related activities though."
But if Zhao Wei is not a siren who now eats lettuce for lunch, she also serves notice that she is no longer the brattish but lovable Little Swallow (Xiao Yenzi) from [My Fair Princess].
The actress says she is all grown up now. "I enjoyed my days of playing Little Swallow," she says. "But I'm getting older now and want to move on. Hopefully, people will accept me as a more mature and versatile actress."
So, has her mature persona - in real and reel-life - made hearts beat faster? "I do have a few admirers," says Zhao, but dismisses tabloid speculation about the celebrities - co-star Alec Su, Hong Kong star Stephen Chow and VJ David Wu - she has been linked with.
In fact, she hasn't had a serious relationship since her break-up with Beijing-based cameraman Vincent Yip, early last year, claims Zhao.
"And I'm warning the Chinese press: if you continue to publish gossip about me and Alec or Stephen or David again, I'm going to be nasty to you guys," she says, saucily, revealing a flash fo Xiao Yenzi.
Dare we say that we didn't hear her?
