In Memory of My Uncle
April 4, 1977

Spring green of gently rolling hills
splashed with the scent of lilacs and nodding daffodils
touched by the whisper of a breeze
that stirs the thawing brook,
my heart is filled with memories
of sharing the look
of this time of year special to us both--
the fresh new beginning of life and growth
and reawakening to God's promise that there is more to come.

Remember now, the happy years we had together--
you teaching me how to milk a cow when I was eight,
quietly collect eggs or swing on the garden gate.
Remember putting up sweet-smelling hay in the big red barn
and neighbors gathering to help out at harvest time.

Remember crisp Autumn evenings spent cracking walnuts
on a log beside the wood-burning stove
while listening to the wind in the cedar grove;
riding the horse-drawn wagon out to the old cane mill;
watching the pure and silent snow fall on that distant hill;
drinking fresh, cold water from the spring;
mushroom hunting, little lambs, and every country thing!

Time cannot fade these memories of the simple life of
childhood that I never thanked you for.
But I know that in my grown-up years
when you'd greet me at the door
with a hearty smile and coffee always waiting,
you somehow knew thoughts left unsaid.
And though I didn't come as often as before,
I would always come back in the Spring.
