To My Parents~30 Years Ago~This Poem, Accompanied by 30 Roses

ON MY BIRTHDAY
March 20

Six pink roses are my thanks to you two
for the six years of babyhood and little girl new
to the beautiful world into which I grew.

Twelve red roses are my thanks to you two
for understanding and loving and seeing me through
the growing-up years, both happy and blue.

Three white roses are my thanks to you two
for letting me find a place of my own
to stand up and be counted and pretend that I'm grown
while you waited and prayed and stood alone.

Nine yellow roses are my thanks to you two
for letting me see, through my children three,
that your gift of life to me was worthwhile;
and as we're caring and sharing and watching them grow,
their dad and I are rewarded so!
And I'm hoping and praying that we can be
the kind of parents you have been to me.

So a rose for each of my years I give
with love and thanks for as long as I live;
and I wish you the happiness I can never repay
and the joy that I feel on my 30th birthday.
