He tries to slip through the kitchen without being seen by Esther (who, he feels always has work for him to do) but she sees him and tells him "Thomas, I need you to start the stove and bring me some wood" Thomas opens his mouth, as if to say something. Esther cuts him off "Now I don't want any of your sass, excuses either, just get to it. Those who don't help when asked, don't get any of the goodies when they are finished." She reminds him.

He nods "yes ma'am, Esther" and heads back out the door, the way he had come. Chops the wood, brings it in, his curly hair stuck to his forehead with sweat. He starts the stove, like he was asked, and waits for her approval.

Esther nods, satisfied with the work.

Thomas heads toward his room.
