She wasn't sure.
Her mind was in turmoil, thoughts of rejection on these sands chief in her mind. After all, she had never disrespected dragonkind. She had never killed a person. Renegade chirped, and she petted him absently, then stopped, realizing how absent the action was. "I haven't been paying you much attention, have I pet?" she asked, and Renegade answered in a soft, low croon of sadness. "I'm sorry," she said, as a wave of guilt washed over her. Would a dragon pick her?

Renegade chirped his forgiveness, drawing her mind back to the burning sands beneath her feet. "Please," she said, tears almost coming to her eyes. "Please." Chief and foremost on her mind was the thought of a green...for Z'yith had a brown...Stop it! she told herself. You have no right to go there!

But in her heart she could not deny it. For a change she pushed back her hair to reveal her almost strikingly pretty face, realizing that she didn't exactly have a Candidate's robe. She was close to the limit, anyway, but grabbed a robe and through it over her Renegade's clothes. It was up to the dragons...

...but a dragon had chosen Z'yith, and he was a Renegade. She supposed, she hoped, that she had just as good a chance as he. Please, she thought, or tried to think, to unborn dragons in their shells. One of you, choose me. She took Renegade off her shoulder and cradled the black-brown ball in her arms, crooning away her nervousness to her fire lizard.
