The twins rushed into the hatching grounds, breathless from running. Though they had ridden runnerbeasts from Honshu, it had taken them a long time to reach Eastern.

'We should've asked for a dragon,' Jarek muttered to Marek, his twin.

'No need to inconvenience dragons. We made it, didn't we?'

'Just barely...' And indeed, what Jarek saw as he scanned the hatching grounds struck fear into his heart. There was only one egg left. 'Mar...'

'I see,' his twin replied crisply. 'Well, we shall just see, shan't we?'

'We shall...' Jarek whispered. He closed his eyes against the thought, but it kept returning. If one Impressed, the other couldn't stay at the Weyr. For the first time in their lives, he and Marek would be separated. He had always dreamed of Impressing, but he hadn't considered this possibility.

'I can always Impress at another Weyr...' Marek whispered to his twin. The thought of losing Jarek was the one thing that could break through his stoic exterior. He felt tears of panic well up in his eyes, and was shamed by them. 'Jarek... You should Impress. You've always wanted to.'

'I know... but I never thought I'd have to leave you...'

As one, the two turned at the sound of an egg cracking. They saw the scene as if through a tunnel... The egg was splintering... Their future lay beyond the shell... What would happen?
