She had been four, travelling to Benden Hold with her mother, for some of Benden's famous wine that her father liked so much. "Yes, everyone knows that Benden wine is far considered the best," her mother had said laughing. "But I've always prefered Telgar, myself. I rather do have odd tastes though." The man chuckled and handed her mother five bottles of the beverage. She had looked at them, admiring the sparkles. "You know how Then gets, he distrusts the runnerbeasts, says they ruin the quality! He likes everything hand-delivered." Then she had heard a dragon's cry, and had let out one of her own, frightened. "Don't cry Thaia, it's a dragon, a queen, ridden by the best rider of them all, Ginny. She was the one who first restored dragonkind to save us from Thread." She had looked up at the sky and watched the beautiful queen flap her great wings with a crack, pounding against the air. From that moment, she had known, though it had lain dormant in her hear until her stepmother had told her that...well, she had known she wanted to be a DragonRider of Pern.
Abruptly the memory stopped, and she was back in Eastern Weyr, sitting against the wall. Hungrily she stared at the Gold egg, but quickly averted her eyes, as if she had committed blasphemy. You have nothing to be ashamed of... a voice seemed to say withing her head. Quietly she straightened her head, looking at the egg. She had nothing to be ashamed of. "I want the queen and I won't deny it, but I must not think of it," she said under her breath. She stared at the rest of the eggs, calming her mind and just taking a minute to enjoy their beauty.
