The only reason that dragon had to go between like that was because his rider was careless. He didn't listen to R'kan, and he was too eager to catch up to the other trained dragons he didn't ask for directions.

R'kan comes up beside him, nodding slightly. "Don't let this make you nervous about going between. As long as you keep your wits about you, you will be fine."

He then asks if all dragons present are old enough to learn how to fly.
