Sokorth glides over to the firestone pits, where piles of the stones have been collected for this training. R'kan follows him, gesturing to the others to come with him.

"As you know, this is firestone. When your dragons chew it and digest it in the second stomach it produces a gas that can be emitted through the mouth. When it contacts air, this gas ignites, and can sear thread. This is probably one of the easier techniques to learn for a full fighting dragon, but it is still difficult, especially when coupled with flying and going between such as is needed in fighting. Sokorth can attest to that, having flown thread."

Sokorth drops his jaw in a draconic grin, and R'kan continues. "The queen will not be chewing firestone, but will receive training with a flamethrower. I will get to that after the others have started, but the basics are the same."

"You need to remind your dragon to think of their second stomachs as they have the firestone. This is where the gas will be produced. Rocks about this size," and he holds up a lump about the size of three fists, "are the best to use. After feeding your dragon the stone and a short wait they will belch, and flame will be produced. There may not be much flame at first, or it may be uncontrolled, but practice can sort that out."

He feeds Sokorth several pieces of the stone. Sokorth rumbles as a sharp cracking sound is heard of teeth grinding rock. After the pieces have disappeared, Sokorth turns his head away and opens his jaws, allowing a tongue of flame to escape. R'kan nods to him, then turns to the weyrlings again.

"After your dragon no longer needs to breathe fire, such as when a flight is completed, he or she will need to regurgitate the firestone ash. This can be done at the pits. Regurgitation can occur anywhere from ten minutes to half an hour after ceasing using the stone, depending on the length of time the dragon has been maintaining flame and the amount of firestone that has been digested."
He motions to them to start giving their dragons firestone, offering Sokorth some more lumps so they can demonstrate charring the 'thread' ropes afterwards.
"Rinali, as a Queen rider, you are not allowed to give your dragon firestone or it will sterilise her. Instead, you use a flamethrower. It uses Agenothree, and is dangerous if you get any on yourself. Using this nozzle, you can regulate the amount that is burned, and the size of the flame. It is more unwieldly than allowing your dragon firestone, but that just means slightly more practice is needed."

Continuing to feed Sokorth firestone, he stops when there is enough to sustain a flame for the training and waits for the weyrlings.
