Even in her reverie, Lian felt the presence of Jyssa, and moved towards the queen egg too. In passing her hand across the now opaque surface of the egg, she let it touch Jyssa's, just to let the other girl know she was there. Beyond that, she stood mesmerized by the egg's aura of confident well-being. She smiled as she felt this life force pulsing through her own blood in a time-worn dance, as if she had known it before, as if they were old friends, or perhaps even lovers. She welcomed it, just as she welcomed the very possibility that she could be standing here, watching this awe-inspiring egg begin its journey as one of the great dragons of Pern. Unconsciously, her smile spread into a grin, and she turned to survey the queen almost automatically. Even she, who always seemed sure of her words, was struck dumb for this one moment. Her gaze lapped up the golden light scintillating from the queen's golden hide, as if Lian were memorizing her every niche. But, Lian decided, she would not merely need to marvel at others' lifemates. Soon enough, one of the hatchlings stumbling from those eggs would lock eyes with her, and she would know then that she would nevermore be completely alone. With a wistful sigh, Lian turned back to face the eggs. After all, they weren't liable to wait forever to hatch. . .
