Topic—Lovers of God

Power Point—Our relationship with God can be measured by the amount of quality time we spend in His presence.

This Week’s Memory Verses—Psalm 42:1–2

Access Database—Psalm 91

Have a Great Time!

by Eric Wilbanks

Have you ever noticed how the "perfect couple" seems to be permanently joined at the hip? Whereas most couples go through the "you don’t spend any time with me" squabble, the "perfect" couples can’t seem to spend enough time together. Her face lights up when he enters the room. He paces the floor waiting for her to arrive. They linger forever when the time comes to say good-bye for the day…then they talk on the phone until the wee hours of the morning. How mushy.

Although large quantities of time are not synonymous with "quality" time, you simply cannot have the second without the first. Someone has said it like this: "Quality time is an accident that happens while spending extended time together." I’d say that’s pretty accurate. Quality time happens when you have one another’s undivided attention. Watching a movie together isn’t usually considered quality time. You may be in the same room together, but you aren’t really interacting. Imagine the following scenario:

Sheila realized the importance of quality time after spending the day with her boyfriend and his buddies who were home from college for the weekend. The day itself was a lot of fun. They spent the day at an amusement park and then had a nice dinner together that evening. But Sheila had hoped to spend time interacting with her boyfriend. Instead, she found herself competing for his attention with cool rides, exciting games and old friends. It was hard for Sheila to get the quality time and conversation that she desperately wanted. Sheila went home feeling disappointed and unloved.

Now, before you react too harshly to Sheila, realize that she wasn’t being selfish. But many of us, like Sheila, were fashioned by God with a distinct need for spending quality time with those we love. Not everyone thinks of quality time in the same way, but we all need to experience it in some fashion.

That’s the great thing about this love relationship that we have with God. His door is always open and He always gives us His undivided attention. We don’t have to compete with anyone or anything else. When we step into His presence, He is willing and able to give us more of His time and attention than we can ever possibly handle! Question is, do we give Him the same?

Now go back and read Psalm 91 one more time.
