I Think I Know You…
by Dan Williams
I remember quite vividly the first time my best friend’s brother tagged me with a treacherous nickname: "Garage Sale Kid." Quickly and without much thought, all the neighbor kids on my block chimed in on the new nickname and used it until it stuck. I was a tough little 6-year-old with a profoundly descriptive new identity! As I look back on those unforgettable years, I can’t really blame my friends from the "hood." I can still see myself in the front yard wearing a matching garage-sale jeans (with knee patches) and Corvette sweatshirt ensemble, playing with a garage-sale case full of garage-sale Hot Wheels cars on a garage-sale race track. When I finished playing with the cars, I got on my garage-sale bike, tucked my garage-sale "Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots" game under my arm and rode into the sunset. I reeked of garage-sale stuff! It was where I went, what I wore, played with, talked about and truly enjoyed. So let’s be honest, I was clearly the Garage Sale Kid. It was obvious to everyone that I was consumed with buying stuff out of someone else’s garage!
In the New Testament, people noticed something odd about Peter and John, too. In Acts 4, this dynamic duo is confronted by some very tense skeptics who are not gathered to hug them, if you know what I mean. However, after a brief encounter with Peter and John, the rulers, elders and teachers of the law made a powerful observation about them—"they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus" (v. 13). Wow. I’m jealous. When people encountered Peter and John, they encountered two men whose lives and identities had been so transformed that the source of their power was obvious to everyone.
Imagine being so intimate with Jesus that it’s obvious to everyone. Joy is in your smile; compassion is in your eyes; life comes from your mouth; tenderness is in your hands; unconditional love oozes from your heart and courage leaps from your gut. Imagine. Light naturally penetrates darkness. If you take the time to get intimate with Jesus, you too will penetrate the darkness—naturally. Chances are someone will notice.
Now go back and read Acts 4:13 one more time.
