I agree with Sharon and do not think that The Color of Water was anti-semetic. In fact, I think it gave a very strong message of tolerance. I found that although most of the Jewish characters in the book were not sympathetic, theirs were human defects not necessarily stemming from their Judaism. In addition, the mother paints many of her extended family as supportive and sympathetic. The Color of Water is a wonderful book and I enjoyed reading it. I think it would be interesting to compare it to Angela's Ashes which is of the same genre.
In response to Sharon, it could be that the author exaggerates the success of his siblings--but perhaps not. He does stress that they had some very difficult years, and the book is written in retrospect. Hindsight is always pinker than reality.
