The definition of Work done is so fundamental.

Work done is a form of energy that must be employed only when mechanical energy is being transferred from one agent into another agent. After the energy transformation, the amount of energy will not exist in form of work at all.

During the process of transformation, one finds that
(1) larger the force exerted on the object the larger is the energy delivered to the object (so obvious).
AND
(2) the displacement of the object by that force is directly proportional to the energy transferred.

Base on this fact(you can do such experiment yourself)
we have
W is directly proportional to F
W is directly proportional to x (displacement)

Rhus , W is directly proportional to Fx.

and we define 1Nm = 1J
