Hall effect
phenomenon in which an electric current applied perpendicularly to a magnetic field generates an electric field that is perpendicular to both the current and the magnetic field, discovered by Edwin H. Hall in 1879. It was believed that the voltage across the generated electric field was in direct proportion to the current, to the magnetic field, and to the conducting material. Klaus von Klitzing demonstrated (1980) that, under the special conditions of low temperature, high magnetic field, and two-dimensional electronic systems (in which the electrons are confined to moving in planes), the voltage difference increases in a series of steps as magnetic field is increased. This is known as the quantized Hall effect. Von Klitzing was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize in physics for his work. Hall effect devices are used as sensors in robotics, electric propulsion, automobiles, telecommunications equipment, and DC motors.
