Yes, absolutely you have, presuming several things are true in your case.
We have our friends largely by chance, as in we have friends from among those we live near,go to school or church with, or are sons/daughters of our parents' friends.
It is therefore to be expected that among such a random grouping, some will be better, maybe even head-and-shoulders better, than others.
It is unfriendly of your friends not to want the best situation for you, and to seek to hold you back.
However, it is clear that some things need to be true. First, your playing ability should indeed be commensurate with your expectations.
Second, the team you have joined must be a team which can meaningfully assist you in terms of teammates ability, coaching, and playing schedule, to reaching your potential.
Third, the team you have joined should be FUN, because if you do not have fun you will not do your best. This often falls by the wayside when players change teams because they go from one they are fully familiar with to one on which they feel like an outsider and are shown no loyalty. I know of a case personally where a good player with the chance to be great did just what you are doing, but the team she went to took her so they wouldn't have to see her on a different squad, and they sat her most of the time. End result, she wasted a summer and is now on yet another team for this year.
Finally, the team taking you must have done so for the right reason, namely that you can help it win. They must not have selected solely because to do so 'steals' the best player of their rival team. They must in short have taken you based upon you, and not ulterior motives.
Good luck in you new endeavor. By the way, you say you are 16. If you are going to look to advance to the collegiate level you had better be playing 18&U this year and not 16&U.
