Sorry for the tardiness of this message. I had posted it (I thought) back in October, but something didn't get through.
As a segue from 9/11, 911, Septragedy, Septower Day, etc. I would like to say that our school (Cox OUSD) was going to be in the news on 9/11/01. I had many strong feelings about 911 especially in the vein of DSL. Now some of the younger of us (post Nam folks) are really thermo-nuke dooms day babies. We have no faith in power, religion, economics, or media. We never had objective relationships to any structures in our society. We have never seen truth, justice, reason, or right acted out on a large scale. Our only political sense is that the most devious will win and so the good guys might as well be as devious as possible to win. "Nader ought to engage in assassination tactics against his opponents."
Us gen-xers have given up our hopes of wealth, health, security, or of a future at all. The thermonuclear reality of the 70's/ 80's took away our hopes and dreams as the imminent end of life was foisted upon our childhoods (you may remember all of the movies/ songs/. The Bush Sr./ Regan hostage payoff/ rescue sabotage, Iran/Contra crap, and endless senseless/ undefined Bretton Woods oriented war machine (wanton aggression against future aggression, Gulf wars, wars on every continent continually raging with fresh supplies (Made in America) and constant media balderdash and ignorance, while overt and brutal racism, forced poverty, rampant and planned nutrient deficiency of minorities, slave wages and conditions for foreigners, constant and complete erosion of the bill of rights, militarization of urban war machines, large scale organized drug importation and management, the rise of the prison-industrial complex as a sort of half-way (to death) house for African-Americans, alongside the global "meconomy," endless disparities in income and real wages, a precipitous "health-gap" the disappearance of local cultures, the disappearance of local programming through a conglomeration of "our" airwaves, the immediate destruction and commercialization of anything original, interesting, unique or wholesome, the evaporation of jobs/ roles in any artistic field, and oh yeah... the decimation of natural resources on an unprecedented scale, the sale of Alaskan natural reserves for oil, did I forget the constant murderous advances of almost all of the third world upon their peoples in the name of multinational economic interests with the use of US military helicopters/ training/ fixed votes/ installed governments/ with the aid of the IMF and WTO on every continent including this one, I might have forgotten the breakup of any representative government in any part of the world in the name of "interests" such as Nicaragua for United Fruit, there was quite a bit of bombing in there for who knows what, the nuclearization of space, trillions of dollars of tax money flushed down the black hole of Star Wars (it is ironic that if one were to impose the story of star wars onto 911, luke skywalker would have been flying a jumbo jet and wearing a turban), did I forget the addition of much CO2 into the atmosphere as a kind of modern experiment?? As a bookend we could look to the WTO protests in Seattle which were mis-reported as usual. It's funny how major media folks can show footage of signs and protesters, and not even bother to read the obvious signs and banners to figure out what everyone is doing?!?! If I sound a bit cynical, I am not... detached, out of body... yes!
"If I were sixteen or seventeen years old and had to listen to that, or read things like that, I would want to give up listening and reading. I would begin thinking up new kinds of sounds, different from any music heard before, and I would be twisting and turning to rid myself of human language."
-Lewis Thomas, 1980, Late Night Thoughts on Listening to Mahler's Ninth Symphony. (with regard to the acceptability of some collateral damage in a nuclear exchange)
Don't get me wrong a few good things have happened, and I have been keeping track!!!!
1. US tobacco gets sort of busted for a while, although people now just seem to be paying more?!?
2. There is less smoking in bars-where singers forge their chops.
3. Switzerland got busted for stealing and hiding from the Jewish folks.
4. We have finally begun to locate planets elsewhere almost every day.
5. This last one is important because I'm on the first ship outta here......!
