*He runs forward toward his goal, seemingly oblivious of the potential dangers in his path...trees, rocks, brooks...but he is not...his instincts honed by generations of mountain people before him. Rushing forward still towards the woman and the child. Reaching the rockface, still at a run...unwilling to risk time climbing down, he throws himself out into the darkness. He plunges downward and suddenly reaches out for something and catches hold of the upper limbs of a birch tree. The creaking of the birch bending fills the night air...closer and closer to the ground as it slows his descent. Finally the tree bends no further and as the coiled energy readies to explode upwards, he releases his grip and falls to the ground, rolling to his feet. Without so much as shaking the dirt from his breeches, he begins running down the mountain again...closer now to her closer now to his son. He smells the acrid wood smoke long before he can see fire...it spurs him forward, knowing they are close.
