In my parents' version, the last 3 lines above went like this: :
You promised me, you said you would; you gotta give in so I'll be good;
Tell me a story, and then I'll go to bed.

Then the song goes into a verse, something like "Remember last September . . . . . . " Something about the father doing something bad and the kid promising not to tell the mother, IF the father tells a story. I remember it as a blackmail type of song. I'd love to know the rest of the song.
