I dont know if it was ever popular, but my grandfather sang me the same song.
The refrain goes something along the lines of:
"So let a smile be your umbrella, on a rainy, rainy day.
And if your sweetheart's left you, a smile will always stay"
All I know is the verse you sang and these next two lines.
If anyone else knows more I'd love to learn the full song.
