My Aunt used to sing this song all the time.
This is what I can remember:

My pop gave me a nickel to buy a pickle
I didn't buy a picke I bought some chew gum

There may have been a verse for penny, but I do not remember that one at all. It did seem a bit longer than that when she sang it. But that was probably 15 to 20 years ago.
