Truth
Is a red wheelbarrow
Beaded in the dawn
Quarter filled
With last night's rain.

By its wheel,
White chickens
Tug worms
From the sodden earth.

Country Man

In the sump
Beside my house
Where jasmine tangles
With plumbago
A ten foot snake
Strains to swallow
A blue-tongue lizard:
Back legs
Scrabble in the air.

I fetch a spade,
Despising my banality.
