It's about lying about someone else and publishing it. For instance, if you suggest (even if you use question marks) that he stole from the Village's funds to finance repairs for his house, you're suggesting that he committed a felony. That's the difference between saying "I don't agree with the Iraq War," and "Bush steals money from the national treasury to buy cars." One is a matter of opinion and the other is an outright lie. Lies are not protected by free speech. There are laws against libel and slander. You called Ed Sieban a crook, then backed it up with lies. Therefore, Ed Sieban has the right to sue you.
