In 1869, the first post office in Near Rockaway was established with Lorenzo D. Simons and Richard Carman keeping it in the general store that later became the White Cannon Inn. An attempt was made to change the village name to Atlantic but duplication was discovered in the state and the compromise, East Rockaway was decided upon white cannon INN popular young peoples hangout in the 40s and 50s I have a photocopy of a picture of the Spanish American War cannon being placed in front of the "White Cannon Hotel". So I know there was a hotel there at one time. Karen white cannon inn is now american legion hall. very long article and many names in east rockaway history which i found on search for white cannon inn nassau county,ny I never knew that there was a hotel at the White Cannon. I knew only Morrison's White Cannon which was a nice restaurant. After that burned, the village trustees voted to make it a park and that is what it is today with the old white cannon still standing there.
