Paul Wolfe hung up the phone. The corners of his mouth curved downward as he lay back on the pillows. Beside him, Madeline was reading. “Didn’t Rose say Nikita was due back this evening?” he asked.

“Yes.” Madeline peered over her glasses at him. “She’s not answering her phone?”

“No.”

Madeline shrugged, and then smiled at the worried look on her husband’s face. “Maybe she’s out with Michael. Did you try her cell?”

“It’s turned off.” Paul sighed. “Christopher said she went to Aruba by herself and I got the impression when I spoke to her before she left that she was upset with him.”

“Lover’s quarrel, maybe?” Madeline asked.

“Probably.”

“That’s a first. It’s not like her to run off like that.”

“She never acted this way with Stephen,” Paul agreed.

“Oh please don’t say that to her,” Madeline sighed. She put her book on the bedside table and turned off the lamp and then moved over to snuggle in beside Paul. “You know how she hates when you do that.”

“Do what?” Paul asked, brows raised. He turned so that Madeline could move closer. “I’m just saying that if Michael Samuelle has the power to upset her so much, maybe she shouldn’t see him.”

“There’s another way you can look at this,” Madeline said, stifling a yawn.

“And that is?” He could feel Madeline smile even though he couldn’t see her face.

“Maybe our daughter’s finally found her match.”

“Hrmph.” Paul snorted, and beside him Madeline chuckled.

It was nearly morning, the sky not yet light, when they were awakened by the ringing of the phone. Paul fumbled around in the dark and a moment later he found the telephone. “Hullo?”

“Mr. Paul Wolfe?”

“Yes.” Paul sat up and reached to turn on the lamp.

Madeline blinked the sleep from her eyes and pulled the sheet up to her neck. She wondered who would be calling at this late hour. She watched as Paul tensed beside her and that alone caused her pulse to accelerate anxiously. Immediately she thought of her children; where were they? Was Nikita back from Aruba? Was Birkoff all right?

“What is it?” Madeline asked, as Paul’s expression turned grim.

Paul was still listening to the voice on the phone. “Yes. Yes, I’ve got it. Thank you,” he said, and then hung up. As he dialed the number on the notepad he quickly filled in Madeline. “Nikita’s been in an accident,” he said, and Madeline felt her heart drop. Dear Lord, please let her be alright.

“That was the police,” Paul continued. “They don’t have much news, Maddy, just that Nikita was in an accident and the authorities down in Aruba were trying to track us down. They gave us a number to the hospital she’s at. I’m calling there now.”
