JESUS DON’T YOU CARE?
Have you ask this question lately? Jesus where are you? Don’t you care about this situation? Jesus, don’t you care about me? Maybe you haven’t said it out loud but in that one brief moment the thought flashed through your mind. Well, quit being so down! Even some of Jesus’ closest friends ask Him the same question.
Luke 10:40 read, “But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
Jesus tells Martha in the next verse that she was worried and upset about many things. I’m sure Martha thought that all of her concerns were quite legitimate. There was a lot of work to be done and all Mary wanted to do was sit at Jesus feet. The hungry needed fed, the weary needed a place to rest and Martha felt the weight of it all on her shoulders. But Jesus told Martha that Mary had chosen the better thing. Notice He didn’t tell Martha that what she was doing wasn’t necessary. He just said it wasn’t the best thing she could be doing right now.
Recently, I have said to Jesus, “Lord, don’t you care? The lost are dying all around us, there are hungry hearts in congregations longing for some spiritual sustenance and I just don’t know how much more I can do.” Jesus clearly said to me “Just rest, don’t lose your focus. Focus on Me and I will do the rest.”
There was another instance recorded in Mark 4:38 that reads “Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
Jesus and the disciples are crossing the Sea of Galilee, probably my favorite place in the whole world. There is such rest there. But suddenly, a storm arose on the waters. Have you had a ‘sudden storm’ recently? Out of what seems like nowhere comes the storm of your life. That place of quiet rest is interrupted with gripping fear. You just know you can’t make it to the other side. You’re going down and no one cares. That’s how the disciples felt on that sea. Read the preceding chapter, they had just left everything to follow this man, Jesus, and they had just got up from hearing a discourse from the greatest teacher who ever lived. Yet, now they are screaming ‘Jesus, do you not care that we’re going to die here?’
I noticed something here that I’ve never seen before. Jesus was at perfect peace going through the storm. He could have stopped the winds at anytime but He did not choose to. He was confident in the protection of His Heavenly Father, even if He had to ride out the entire storm. But Jesus stopped the storm because of the disciple’s lack of faith. I wonder what would have happen if the disciples had been like Mary and chosen ‘the better thing’? Look at verse 40, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” We look at this story as one of Jesus’ great miracles and in fact it was. But I wonder what greater miracle would have come about if they had simply trusted Jesus to guide them through the storm? Trust and faith will take us through the storm. Yet, even if you have little faith Jesus will bring a miracle your way to calm your storm.
We serve a risen Savior and He is to be praised! He does care for us. I Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” What a promise! Men, be encouraged. Christ is on the throne and HE IS FAITHFUL. He has promised us that those who hunger and thirst SHALL BE FILLED. I am holding onto that promise.
