a ball
a dive
a weight

Ever try to hold a ball under water? Despite all you can do it forces it's way to the surface. I think our spiritual lives are like that ball. Left to ourselves, we naturally gravitate toward the surface of life, toward the superficial, toward news, weather and sports.

To go deeper, to be a deeper person, to live out from a deeper place, we need to take a dive. Think about what that means. One must conform his body, making it aerodynamic. One must put forth the effort to thrust our whole being into the water, going deeper and deeper. This action speaks to me of the spiritual disciplines such as silence, meditation, prayer, scripture reading, study, etc. (name what helps you go deeper) While life naturally moves us toward the suface, the dive moves us deeper where we touch and see the Lord's heart. If you know what I mean, you know that even a glimpse can give one trememdous spiritual strength and power. Yet few of us can stay deep for very long. Perhaps that is for the best. We are to be in the world and not of it. We must come down from the mountain top, for most of our life is lived in the valley between the summits. We take that which we gain in the secret place out into our ordinary lives.

This brings us to weights. I was thinking that even it we make no effort to dive, to live more deeply, there are still forces that act upon us to get us into a better position to encounter God's grace. The weights of life are designed by God to force us deeper. These weights can be just the routine hassles of life we face every day, or they can be things that accumulate in our lives like unforgiveness, bitterness, unresolved anger, etc. They get heavier and heavier and before you know it your near the bottom. Then you might understand what Jesus meant when he said, the tax-gathers and harlots are closer to the kingdom than you religious people. Religious people are experts are floating on the surface of life.

a ball, a dive and weights. Lets take a swim together , shall we?
