I was at Gaynes from October 69 to September 70. Can't remember the house but Neptune sounds right! Just to the left of the library, and just in front of the 'Tuck Shop' and the hall, which I've acrylic polished more than once under the watchful eye of Ray Gledhill! Tom Baker I think it was who was the chief and the house matron Midge was a real pearl. Paul (Dunhew ?) was a great guy, taking a few of us out on to Graffham Water where I learnt to sail. Not bad really. To pass the spare time I used to paint psychedelic pictures of Jagger, Hendrix etc., which gave me a little credibility with staff and mates alike. The Major(Burnett or something like that!) who was responsable for the whole affair was a real.....!! Knocked me for a months release because I had been ill and hadn't earned enough to put my 10 shilling release fund in the bank!!
Worked with Gerry (Butler) the carpenter before doing a C&G metalwork training and came out if it with a merit so I supose it wasn't too devastating for me.
Why was I there? I'd been at the Stone's concert in Hyde Park on the Saturday and being NFA I'd found a window open in a building around London Fields the Sunday night in order to crash. The police arrived at about two in the morning and accused me of burglary with aggression on a police officer. And there you are! I was fit for 6 weeks at Ashford Remand, 3 weeks under observation at the Scrubs and then a jolly ride out into the country to clean the pig-pens and get brutalised by a bunch of yobbos!
Fourty years later I'm living in France where I've bought a house with my French wife and we're doing reasonably well I suppose. Remember a few names but won't mention them here in order not to embarass anybody.
Good luck to all those who survived it, albeit that it wasn't the hardest of borstals. I had a friend who did Dover and he killed himself!
Bravo the justice system.
