There were a bunch of Swami's at a monastery where I was staying that were debating this very concept. It had been reported that a particularly gifted Swami, while deep in a state of samadhi, realized that some grass was being kicked outside. He came out of his deep trance, ran outside and apprehended and scolded the offender. Is that just Hindu urban legend (of which there seems to be an abundance)? Well, the Swamis that I was listening too came to this conclusion. It comes down to eat or be eaten. It takes organic matter to feed organic matter.

Personally I believe that a lion commits no sin when it kills a gazelle, neither do we commit sin when we kill a cow. But if it grosses you out, stick to brussel sprouts and cauliflower.
